Whether you opt for the Brasov one-day tour or for the two-hour tour, it would be a shame to miss the Black Church in Brasov. Not only is it the largest gothic house of worship from Southeastern Europe, but it is not every day that you get to see a building that miraculously survived a devastating fire, like the one in 1689. Its walls had blackened from the fire, which is how it became known as the Black Church.
One of the most visited tourist attractions in Romania, the parish church of the Lutheran Evangelic community was finished in 1477. It is also the largest church in Romania, measuring 89 meters in length and 38 meters in width, which means in can host up to 5000 people.
Stepping inside, you will find yourself impressed not just by its grandeur, which can compete with the great European cathedrals, but also by the rich display of color. The Black Church houses the second largest collection of oriental rugs in Europe, after the Topkapi Palace in Istanbul – over 100 pieces, dating back to the 15th-16th century.
And that is not all: have you ever seen a bronze bell that could crush you like a fly with its impressive weight of 6 tons? Well, the Black Church is also the proud owner of the largest bell in Romania.
Last, but not least, you will definitely want to take a picture of the famous pipe organ, built between 1836 and 1839 by the Berlin company Buchholz, which is also quite remarkable in size: approximately 4000 pipes, 4 manuals, each with 56 keys, and a pedalboard with 27 keys, 76 ranks and 63 registers…
In 2014, when Prince Charles visited the Brasov historical center, he declared – “I like it here very much!”.
You will definitely feel the same if you include the Black Church in your tour of the most important Romanian Churches, which is sure to be an uplifting experience, much like any encounter with beauty and art.
And we have not even mentioned the great food from the best restaurants in Brasov and the many souvenir shops.
We include Black Church in the program in multiple forms of booking tours to museums, monasteries or medieval villages, but this must only tell us when and how you have scheduled vacation just to you can suggest and overlap with various events that occur frequently, such as concerts, festivals, plays, fairs and exhibitions itinerant, seasonal discounts, etc..
