The city of Alba-Iulia, located in Central Romania is the site of an old Vauban-style fortress, considered impossible to conquer due to the 7-corner star model designed by the great French engineer, veteran, and architect Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban.
The Alba Carolina citadel, an important destination on our Castles of Romania tour, is surrounded by three lines of fortification and its remarkable architecture make it one of the most representative fortresses in Romania; it is also one of the largest of its kind in Eastern Europe.
Its historical significance lies in the fact that in the Antiquity it was the site of the Roman castrum Apulum, after which it was rebuilt and became the seat of the Princes of Transylvania. Later it became a symbol of the Romanian Union when in 1600 Mihai Viteazul (Michael the Brave) made it the capital of the United Romanian Principalities of Moldova, Transylvania, and Wallachia.
Furthermore, this is where the Great National Assembly took place in 1918, which legitimized the union of Transylvania with the Kingdom of Romania.
The history of the Romanian people has been a turbulent one, marked by oppression and conflict, but once you see how much beauty and hospitality this country has to offer, you will understand why so many have wanted to conquer it.
